Gordes overlooks a wide plain which contains the Calavon and Sorgue rivers. Its narrow streets lead down to the walls of the town from which extensive views are obtained.

The Chateau de Gordes was built 500 years ago on the site of a 12th century fortress. It has a fine Renaissance door at the entrance and inside a magnificent Renaissance fireplace, one of the largest in France. Today, the castle acts as both a Town Hall and a Museum housing the works of art of the modern painter, Pol Mara.   (above)
